一只猫认识了一只老鼠，想和它成为朋友。老鼠答应了它，并和它住在一起。为了过冬的需要，它们买来一罐猪油，并把它放在教堂里，认为这样会安全些。过了不久，猫开始惦记起那罐油。它找了个借口，说自己的妹妹生了只小猫，要找它当教父。但它跑到了教堂里，把油面的皮给吃了。当猫回来时，老鼠问它给小猫取了什么名字，猫说：“没了皮儿。”

后来，猫又去了一次教堂，吃掉了剩下的油。而老鼠则在家里打扫着房间。当猫回到家里时，老鼠问它给小猫取了什么名字。“全完了，”猫回答。

冬天到了，老鼠肚子很饿，想和猫一起到教堂里吃猪油。他们来到教堂，却发现只剩下了一个空罐。老鼠开始明白所发生的事，并指责猫的偷吃：“首先，‘没了皮儿’，然后‘剩一半’，最后……”老鼠还没把话説完，就被猫给吃了。
