汤米·狄波拉（Tomie dePaola），1934年出生于美国康乃狄克州，1956年毕业于布雷克美术学校，开始投入创作图画书的行列。三十五岁时，狄波拉从加州美术工艺学院拿到了硕士学位。次年，他又在朗山学院得到相当于博士的学位。在艺术学院执教数年后，狄波拉最终还是决心放弃教职，专心奉献于儿童文学。
现在，汤米·狄波拉已经是美国最重要的儿童图画书作家之一。除了他自写自画的创作之外，他还为一百多本书画过插图。他的作品常有他以自己的家庭为背景，从自己真情实感的角度出发，描写家人之间的浓密亲情，真切而令人感动。
