One day Mog was chasing a butterfly when something happened to her paw. It was very sore. So sore that she couldn’t eat or sleep.“She’ll have to go to the vee ee tee,” said Mrs Thomas. (She said vee ee tee instead of vet so that Mog wouldn’t understand.) But Mog hates going to the vet and before her paw can be made better, she causes great confusion in the vet’s surgery…

Children's Literature A reissue of the original 1996 edition, this version of Mog includes a CD with two different readings by Andrew Sachs. The first narration is a bit confusing at first, as it contains many conversational asides, sound effects, and explanatory additions to the text, such as, "We're nearly there, Mog," as they drive to the vet's office, or "It's not as bad as all that, Mog." The second is a verbatim reading of the text, with a cat "meow" to signal that it is time to turn the page. The story itself is a delightful recounting of what happened after Mog got a thorn in her paw while chasing a butterfly around the yard. As is true for most cats, she did not want to be at the vet's, no matter how much her paw hurt. The removal of the thorn goes well, but when the vet tries to give Mog a pill, chaos ensues. Mog leaps off the examination table and goes racing through the waiting room, inciting the animals to squawk, bark, eek, hiss, and give chase. Peace is eventually restored. Mog gets a restful night of contented sleep, while the vet has a restless night dreaming of wild beasts on the loose in this engaging story that any cat lover will appreciate. Reviewer: Maggie Chase
