内容简介

Susan Gal offers a heartwarming tale of old-fashioned goodness. The industrious pigs of Day by Day build a home, plant a garden, help their neighbors, and then gather in a harvest grown with hard work and kindness.

The language is sweet and simple: Day by day, the seasons turn. Shoulder to shoulder, pigs gather the harvest. Hand in hand, pigs give thanks, then cheek to cheek, they dance. The artwork is bright and full of the merry antics of a
happy family and a tight-knit community. And these pigs are flat out adorable!
This delightful story celebrates family and community, caring and sharing.

"Day by Day" is endearing and buoyant. Every detail in the richly illustrated scenes is lovingly considered, and nuances emerge- rewarding viewing after viewing. The story about truly belonging, in the heart of a family that ventures forth together, is so reassuring; we should all be so lucky. Each of the pigs become familiar individuals: grandpa, parents, sisters and brothers, wearing dapper `30s or `40s style clothes and hats, and a cheeky pet goose who's always up to something. Long held pig tradition may explain why they build their house of BRICK. They arrange family photos and pig kids' drawings on the wallpapered rooms with flowered sofas and rugs, and industriously plant a vegetable garden that grows "inch by inch". The piglets may end their day reading Charlotte's Web by lamplight, or yawn, rubbing their eyes, after a party with dance and music played on a Swineway piano.

I was delighted by Gal's exuberant palette of color, textures and patterns, her use of light as our pigs are silhouetted in shadow against a bright window, or the contrast of vividly colored plants and bugs against the dark loam of the garden. She captures winsome gesture and attitude in every pig, bird, bug, pert hat, and dandelion puff. Even the sun and the harvest moon glow like beaming guardians over their charges. Every posture rings true, like a "baby" held aloft, a bit unsure of his cooing neighbor;"kids" playing kick the can or "mom's" affectionate smile tucking in the little ones.

Amazon's "about the author" reveals that she worked for Disney animation as an "actor with a pencil" before returning to California. Disney classics such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, the toons of Roger Rabbit, win us with empathy for the characters' dreams, our willing suspension of disbelief in magic, - done with artful rendering and...great storytelling.

Watch for the recurring bee as well!

I love this book & have purchased copies for adult friends as well as their kids.
