Old Agatha is based on a character who shows up in many folktales from Russia and Hungary. Somwtimes she is a wise woman who holds important information that a character needs. Sometimes she's just downritht creepy and scary. It is probable that many yeras ago,parents used stories of characters like Old Agatha to discourage children from wandering away into the woods and getting lost or injured.
